Cleaning the HVAC Air Filter and Why It’s Helpful

Have you inspected your air conditioner filter? As a general rule, you should inspect it each month and take the appropriate steps when it is dirty. We’ll share details about the multiple types of AC filters, why they work better with regular care and step-by-step instructions on how to clean and replace reusable filters effectively.

Types of AC Filters

Your filter design affects indoor air quality, how effectively air flows and whether you should clean or change it when it becomes worn down or clogged. Here’s a summary of some of the most common designs:

  • Disposable filters are commonly made from fiberglass and a paper frame. These filters are meant for short-term use and need to be changed every 1 to 3 months. They are usually low cost and easy to replace but not as environmentally friendly since they are eventually thrown away.
  • Reusable filters have sturdier frame materials made with metals like aluminum or plastic. These filters can be rinsed out and reused multiple times, often lasting many years if cared for properly. They are more environmentally friendly and budget friendly in the long run. On the other hand, washing them takes extra time and effort than simply swapping out a disposable model.
  • Electrostatic filters utilize static electricity to capture pollutants quickly while ensuring airflow. These can be either disposable or reusable. Reusable electrostatic filters will need regular upkeep to maintain their effectiveness.
  • HEPA filters, or high-efficiency particulate air filters, are the best filters for residential needs, trapping 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns. The majority of HEPA filters are disposable, but they last for up to one year before having to be replaced. While they offer high filtration, they are more expensive and aren’t always compatible with all HVAC systems.

Why Should You Wash or Replace the AC Filter? 4 Important Reasons

It’s a common chore to overlook, but rinsing or replacing your AC filter is crucial for reasons like:

  1. Improved air quality: A fresh filter traps dust, pollen, pet dander and other contaminants, keeping your indoor air cleaner and safer. This kind of full spectrum comfort is especially crucial for people with allergies, asthma or other health conditions that restrict breathing.
  • Energy efficiency: If you never clean or change your filter, the dust and debris clogging it forces the AC to exert even more energy. A new filter restores airflow, decreasing the unit’s workload and putting a stop to an increase in your energy bills.
  • Longer life span: Regularly maintaining the filter prevents the system from overheating, decreases wear and tear, and can even extend your unit’s lifespan!
  • Saving money: A clean filter lowers extra expenses by cutting your energy bills, limiting damage and minimizing the risk of early replacement for the AC.

Your Guide to Washing Your AC Filter

Apply these steps every one to three months to get all the perks of a clean air filter:

Prepare: To start, turn off the AC system to avoid electrical hazards. Then, find your AC filter. It might be in the return air duct, in the air handler cabinet or inside the unit itself.

Remove the filter: Gently remove the filter from the compartment. Check for holes or tears. If the filter is visibly damaged, go ahead and replace it.

Vacuum the filter: Use the brush accessory on your vacuum cleaner to clear out any dirt, hair, fibers and other loose debris.

Wash the filter: Take the filter outdoors and give it a thorough rinse with a garden hose. For a deeper clean, use a mild detergent.

Dry the filter: Leave the filter out to air dry completely before putting it back. In the meantime, don’t run your air conditioner or you risk bringing more dust particles inside.

It’s necessary to note that disposable filters cannot be washed. They need to be replaced when they become too dirty. The replacement filter should be the appropriate size to confirm compatibility with your AC unit.

Other Parts of an Air Conditioning System to Clean

In addition to the filter, additional AC components need regular maintenance for best performance and longevity. Contact an HVAC professional for help servicing components including:

  • The evaporator coils inside the air handler extract heat from the air. Over time, these coils gather a lot of dust, which restricts heat transfer efficiency. Technicians apply a specific cleaning solution to eliminate dust and grime.
  • The condenser coils located in the outdoor unit get rid of heat removed from your house. These coils are left out in the worst weather and become dirty quickly. Although you can lightly rinse off dirt, leaves and other debris by grabbing a garden hose, leave more thorough seasonal cleanings to a professional.
  • The fan blades in your AC system’s blower will also accumulate dust and dirt. An HVAC technician will inspect the fan as part of their yearly tune-up, wiping down and realigning the blades as necessary to restore normal operation.
  • The condensate drain line in your AC unit can become clogged up with algae, mold and debris. When drainage slows or stops, contact a qualified maintenance specialist to clear the drain line using a strong cleaning solution or mold treatment.
