4 Tips to Prep for Air Conditioning Season
Summer may seem like it’s still a few months away. But before you realize, you’ll be transitioning from heating to cooling. Soon enough your air conditioner is running around the clock to maintain comfy temperatures. It’s wise to prep for the extra usage before temperatures really start to climb.
Service Experts Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing and our team of Experts can help. We’ve created our comprehensive air conditioning memberships to increase your system’s energy efficiency and dependability. Our professional knowledge goes a long way, but there are many other tasks you can do to protect your air conditioner. Here are four of the top ways you can prep for air conditioning season.
1. Clean Your Air Conditioner
Don’t fret, you won’t have to take apart your system and clean every part. Our Experts take care of this during your routine air conditioning maintenance appointment.
But cleaning the surroundings around your air conditioner will go a long way too. We suggest:
-
- Clearing twigs, leaves and grass clippings from the outside of your air conditioner.
-
- Keeping surrounding grass and plants cut back.
-
- Maintaining at least 1 foot of clear room on all sides around your air conditioner.
If your air conditioner’s fins get full of dirt or yard refuse, this can decrease performance and comfort. Your air conditioner will have to work harder to give the same level of cooling. In extreme cases, it might stop working altogether and need air conditioning repair.
Your comfort and satisfaction are important to us, so we like to minimize the possibility of repairs in the first place. A regularly serviced air conditioner typically runs more efficiently, is less likely to malfunction and typically lasts longer.
2. Put in a New Air Filter
Regularly replacing your air filter is important for your air conditioner’s well-being. During a service visit, our pros check filters and put in new ones if needed. Replacing the filter is quick and simple. You can (and should) do it on your own whenever!
How regularly you need to get a new filter depends on:
-
- The type of filter you use.
-
- If someone in your house has asthma, allergies or other respiratory problems.
-
- If you have pets.
Basic flat filters typically last for 30–60 days. Deeper pleated filters can last up to 90 days. If you’re unsure if your filter requires replacement, take it out, and angle it toward the light. Replace it if you can’t see light through it.
Filters catch dust, pollen and other pollutants from your house’s air, keeping airflow healthy. Forgetting about it will affect your house’s indoor air quality and your air conditioner’s efficiency.
In some situations a dirty filter might even damage your system or cause it to malfunction. Regularly replacing it will keep the inside of your air conditioner cleaner and airflow more balanced.
If someone in your home has allergies, asthma or other respiratory issues, ask our Experts about how a HEPA filter can relieve symptoms.
3. Test Your Thermostat and Smoke Detectors
Now is a good time to check other crucial pieces of your air conditioner and other safety systems.
If you use a programmable thermostat, make sure that it’s running right. If the batteries are running out, change them.
For extra control and convenience, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. They make saving energy much more convenient. And select models can even tell you if there’s an issue with your air conditioner or if your air filter needs to be changed.
Although they’re not part of your air conditioning system, now is an excellent time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Confirming they still work gives peace of mind and an added layer of protection.
4. Keep Heat Outside
One of the best ways to boost energy-efficient cooling is to decrease the amount of exterior heat seeping into your home. Using premium window treatments like blackout curtains, honeycomb shades or plantation shutters, can keep the sun from influencing indoor temperatures.
Here are several other methods to keep your home chilly without turning down the thermostat:
-
- Turn on ceiling fans when you’re in the room.
-
- Use your bathroom fan to remove heat and humidity when you shower.
-
- Keep air vents uncovered to ensure ample airflow.
-
- Add caulk and weatherstripping to seal your doors and windows.
