What causes indoor air pollution?

Many everyday items may create poor indoor air quality in your Champaign residence.

This includes:

  • Compounds in [flooring, furniture and drapes that emit fumes
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Paint
  • Personal care products
  • Air fresheners and candles

Though they are often more efficient, updated homes don’t breathe the way older residences do. Tight weather stripping and storm doors keep inside air in and exterior air out. This provides more energy savings, but the limited exchange of outdoor and indoor air can cause pollutants accumulating indoors.

When this occurs, a whole-house ventilation system is recommended. Ventilation systems replace contaminated indoor air for more breathable outdoor air without giving up energy savings.
